My website project focuses on the folklore of contortion in the circus. Contortion is an ancient art form that originated in Asia, specifically Mongolia and China. Contortionists have performed in the circus for many years as an element of the freak show. Contortionists can perform solo acts or band together to create larger group acts. Performance is an intrinsic element of contortion, and circus in general, and feeds the artform. Contortion consists of many specific poses and shapes that each have their own unique names. Performers typically wear special costumes that vary greatly but often are made of a stretchy or loose fitting material to allow for easy bending. When not performing, contortionists spend the majority of their time training and improving their skills. This consists of both flexibility work and conditioning. Contortion is often viewed as bizarre and strange as the flexibility of the performers is so extreme.
